Job Overview

The Department invites suitably qualified candidates to apply for the position of Driver within the Supply Chain Management Directorate, based at the Head Office in Polokwane. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing reliable driving, messenger, and clerical support services to ensure efficient departmental operations.

Minimum Requirements

Educational Qualification

  • ABET / AET or Grade 10, as recognised by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA).

Experience and Licensing

  • Proven driving experience.
  • A valid South African driver’s licence.
  • A valid Professional Driving Permit (PDP).

Knowledge and Skills Requirements

  • Knowledge of procedures for operating government motor vehicles, including:
    • Obtaining trip authorities
    • Completing vehicle logbooks
    • Procuring consumables such as fuel
    • Arranging basic vehicle services (e.g. changing or repairing a flat tyre)
  • Understanding of prescripts governing the correct utilisation of government vehicles, including:
    • Approved purposes for vehicle use
    • Safe storage and parking requirements
  • Knowledge of vehicle control, monitoring, and retrieval procedures.
  • Basic understanding of registry and clerical work.
  • Computer operating skills.
  • Good planning and organisational ability.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency in relevant languages.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Render core driver services in accordance with departmental policies.
  • Drive light and medium motor vehicles to:
    • Transport officials and passengers
    • Deliver and collect mail, documents, and related items
  • Perform routine maintenance checks on allocated vehicles and report defects promptly.
  • Accurately complete all required vehicle records, registers, and logbooks.
  • Provide clerical and messenger support services within the office.
  • Collect, deliver, copy, and fax official documentation.
  • Assist with duties in the registry section as required.
