The Pattern Making Programme (PMP) is a specialised skills development initiative designed to address the critical skills shortage in South Africa’s manufacturing and apparel sector. This intensive six-month programme focuses on developing industry-ready pattern makers with strong technical competence, practical experience, and workplace readiness.

The programme equips interns with the essential knowledge and hands-on exposure required to transition confidently into professional pattern-making roles within manufacturing environments.

Programme Overview

The Pattern Making Programme combines theoretical learning and structured workplace experience to ensure participants gain both foundational understanding and real-world application. Interns are trained to meet current industry standards while adapting to evolving manufacturing practices and technologies.

Participants will develop the ability to translate creative concepts into technically accurate patterns, ensuring efficiency, quality, and consistency in garment production.

What Interns Will Learn

Throughout the programme, interns will gain practical and technical skills, including:

  • Creating accurate and production-ready patterns from design sketches
  • Using pattern-making software effectively and efficiently
  • Applying sustainable and responsible pattern-making practices

Training Structure and Industry Exposure

Interns will work closely with experienced pattern makers and industry professionals. The programme follows a structured monthly cycle that includes:

  • Two weeks of classroom-based theory, focusing on technical knowledge and industry principles
  • Two weeks of practical workplace experience, providing hands-on exposure to real manufacturing processes, tools, and best practices

This blended approach ensures continuous learning, practical application, and professional growth throughout the six-month period.

Basic Requirements

To be considered for the Pattern Making Programme, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • South African citizen
  • Aged between 18 and 33 years
  • Currently unemployed
  • No criminal record
  • Hold a diploma or degree, or be a final-year student, in:
    • Clothing Production
    • Fashion Design
    • Or a related qualification
