Job Overview

Groote Schuur Hospital invites applications from suitably qualified medical practitioners for the position of Medical Officer Grade 1 to Grade 3: Psychiatry. This role focuses on delivering high-quality, patient-centred psychiatric services within a public healthcare setting, while supporting clinical governance, multidisciplinary collaboration, and professional development.

Salary Package

  • Grade 1: R1,001,349 per annum
  • Grade 2: R1,142,553 per annum
  • Grade 3: R1,322,352 per annum

A portion of the remuneration package may be structured according to the individual’s personal needs.

Minimum Requirements

Educational Qualification

  • An appropriate qualification that allows registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Medical Practitioner.

Professional Registration

  • Registration with the HPCSA as a Medical Practitioner.

Experience Requirements

Grade 1

  • South African qualified candidates: No experience required after HPCSA registration.
  • Foreign-qualified candidates: Minimum of 1 year relevant experience after registration with a recognised foreign Health Professional Council, where Community Service is not required.

Grade 2

  • South African qualified candidates: Minimum of 5 years’ appropriate experience as a Medical Practitioner after HPCSA registration.
  • Foreign-qualified candidates: Minimum of 6 years’ relevant experience after registration with a recognised foreign Health Professional Council.

Grade 3

  • South African qualified candidates: Minimum of 10 years’ appropriate experience as a Medical Practitioner after HPCSA registration.
  • Foreign-qualified candidates: Minimum of 11 years’ relevant experience after registration with a recognised foreign Health Professional Council.

Inherent Job Requirements

  • Participation in commuted overtime is compulsory.
  • Participation in the after-hours call system.

Competencies and Skills

  • Appropriate and proven clinical experience in Psychiatry.
  • Excellent clinical assessment, consultation, and patient management skills.
  • Proven ability in planning, organising, and implementation of healthcare services.
  • Sound knowledge of public health policies, guidelines, and relevant legislation.
  • Ability to manage resources effectively and cost-efficiently.
  • Willingness and competence to work across disciplines when required.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Deliver efficient, cost-effective, and high-quality psychiatric clinical services with a patient-centred approach.
  • Diagnose and treat mental health conditions, injuries, and related health issues.
  • Prescribe, monitor, and manage treatment plans, including medication and therapeutic interventions.
  • Maintain accurate, comprehensive, and legally compliant clinical records.
  • Refer patients to specialists or other healthcare providers when appropriate.
  • Ensure compliance with clinical governance standards, HR policies, and the Code of Conduct.
  • Contribute to financial management through effective use of resources.
  • Complete required Continuing Professional Development (CPD) activities to maintain HPCSA registration.
  • Participate in training and educational programmes for healthcare professionals.
  • Compile and submit medical reports and documentation for legal and administrative purposes.
  • Uphold the integrity, ethics, and reputation of the medical profession.
