Job Overview
Groote Schuur Hospital invites suitably qualified and experienced candidates to apply for the position of Medical Specialist (Anaesthetics) Grade 1 to Grade 3. This role offers an opportunity to contribute to high-level clinical care, academic leadership, and specialist anaesthesia services within a leading tertiary hospital in South Africa.
Salary Package
- Grade 1: R1,341,855 per annum
- Grade 2: R1,531,032 per annum
- Grade 3: R1,773,222 per annum
A portion of the total remuneration package may be structured according to the individual’s personal needs.
Minimum Requirements
Educational Qualification
- An appropriate qualification that allows registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Medical Specialist in Anaesthesiology.
Professional Registration
- Current registration with the HPCSA as a Medical Specialist in Anaesthesiology.
- Foreign-qualified applicants must be registered with a recognised foreign Health Professional Council.
Experience
- Grade 1: No post-registration experience required.
- Grade 2: Minimum of 5 years’ appropriate experience as a Medical Specialist after HPCSA registration.
- Grade 3: Minimum of 10 years’ appropriate experience as a Medical Specialist after HPCSA registration.
Inherent Job Requirement
- Participation in commuted overtime is compulsory.
Competencies and Skills
- Eligibility for structured fellowship exposure in:
- Quality Improvement
- Paediatric Anaesthesia
- Neuroanaesthesia
- Cardiac Anaesthesia
- Research experience and willingness to participate in CMSA examinations.
- MMed in Anaesthesia.
- Strong undergraduate and postgraduate teaching experience.
- Proven ethical and professional conduct in anaesthetic practice.
- Insight into healthcare challenges in South Africa and Africa, including diversity, transformation, and equity.
- Strong teamwork, interpersonal, communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Computer literacy.
- Demonstrated leadership, administrative, and management skills in anaesthesia and peri-operative medicine.
- Proven record of effective leadership and organisational ability in clinical anaesthesia and peri-operative services.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Manage specialist anaesthetic patients within Groote Schuur Hospital and affiliated institutions, including:
- Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital
- New Somerset Hospital
- Mowbray Maternity Hospital
- Deliver comprehensive specialist clinical anaesthesia services.
- Provide academic leadership in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, training, and research.
- Organise and contribute to anaesthetic skills training programmes.
- Lead, manage, and mentor Registrars, including performance assessments.
- Contribute significantly to departmental administration and management.
- Provide outreach services and professional support to referring institutions.
- Promote departmental teamwork, development, and continuous improvement.
